Musings 1.5
“I live freely under my banner! But I also accept all my responsibilities” - Captain Harlock
I never thought I’d be talking about an anime quote but stick with me on this one.
I found myself watching a brilliant documentary over the weekend about the unique musical and cultural career of Daft Punk. I’m not sure if I found it fascinating because of the prominence of their music during the years I grew up, or if the mystery behind the duo is where the intrigue is housed. Nevertheless, the quote above really struck me and I thought why not include in my Musings.
In the context of the documentary, they reference this quote as a material point of interest for Daft Punk and their choice to live their creative lives through this philosophy. In their world, they find freedom in creating music and art that they would want to hear and experience. This is followed up to a point as they recognise their influence in leaving an industry-changing legacy that will last for a long time to come.
It could be argued that this approach could benefit a lot of people when they look at what they’re doing and why. Are you doing something that holds meaning to you? But do you recognise what message or legacy you want to leave behind?
It’s not a perfect quote but it really brought my attention to the fact that sometimes you can find that little bit of inspiration in the strangest of places. It could be an inspiring human, it could be from an incredible story, or in this case it could be from an obscure Japanese cartoon pirate.
