Why Wave Makers Exists
A note from Brett
As I approach ten years since the shark attack that changed my life, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the support I received and the places my story has taken me.
I started speaking in schools long before stepping onto corporate stages and those early sessions showed me just how much young people gain from honest conversations about resilience, fear, purpose and perspective.
I’ll never forget the comments a teacher left me with after my first ever talk to a group of students
“You’ve definitely changed someone’s life here today”
Wave Makers is my way of honouring and leaning into that decade of support with the aim of giving more schools the chance to experience these workshops, regardless of their budget or circumstance.
How Wave Makers Works
-
$1500 funds a workshop for a full year group
Choose the school you want to support
Funds directly support the delivery of presentations for school year groups, providing students with resilience tools, mindset frameworks and ocean-awareness education.
A portion of all Wave Makers funding supports a partnered shark research organisation
-
Contribute to the General Funding Pool (Any contributions under $1500)
Nominate a school to join the pool’s priority list
When the pool reaches $1500, the next school on the list receives a workshop
-

Q&A
Simple reflection/goal setting activity
Tools for resilience, confidence & navigating setbacks

Follow up prompts for teachers and students
Young people today are navigating more pressure, uncertainty and noise than ever before. These workshops create space for perspective, meaningful reflection and real human connection that is built on valuable lived experience.

Yes — if you sponsor a full workshop ($1500 or more), you can nominate any school you’d like to support. For contributions under $1500, you’re still welcome to nominate a school to be added to the General Funding Pool priority list.
-
That’s no problem. I’m able to deliver Wave Makers workshops anywhere in Australia. If travel is required, we’ll simply discuss the best way to make it happen and ensure the workshop is delivered smoothly.
-
Every contribution under $1500 goes into the General Funding Pool. Each time the pool reaches $1500, a workshop is allocated to the next school on the priority list. The list operates on a first come, first served basis. Schools are added in the order they are nominated by donors or identified as having a clear need. When their turn comes up, they receive the next fully funded workshop.
-
Absolutely. Schools can contact me to be added to the General Funding Pool list or to discuss securing a sponsored session.
-
Not at this time. Wave Makers is a community-driven funding initiative rather than a registered charity. However, every contribution goes directly toward supporting school workshops and shark research.
-
Yes. While Wave Makers is designed primarily for schools, you’re welcome to nominate a community group, youth program, or sporting club. If the environment is appropriate for a workshop and the group would benefit from the session, we can absolutely explore making it happen.
-
Once you complete the Wave Makers form or get in touch, I’ll send you either an invoice or a secure payment link — whichever you prefer.
For contributions over $1500, once payment is received, your nominated school or group is locked in for a funded workshop.
You’ll also receive a confirmation email with next steps and updates as your contribution progresses.
